2017 Season Recap

The 2017 Steamers were a record breaking team with a lot to offer to Edenton this summer. The Clams brought in top notch talent once again to lead them back the East Division Final after missing the playoffs in 2016.

The Edenton Steamers, coached by Head Coach Dustin Coffman, Assistant Coach Tyler Packanick and Pitching Coach Russ Burroughs, finished the year with a 32-27 record. Along with a trip to the East Division Final, the Clams sent six players to the CPL All-Star Game. Those names included: Jason Agresti (C), James Battley (OF), Jamie Galazin (OF), Carmen Giampetruzzi (LHP), Connor Kopach (2B) and Billy Wilson (OF).

Carmen Giampetruzzi finished the regular season as the leader in the Coastal Plain League in appearances (24) and saves (9). Billy Wilson finished the season leading the club in batting average at .322. The Loyola Marymount product clubbed 13 home runs with 41 RBIs during the regular season. Wilson also set a CPL and a franchise record in runs scored (58). James Battley and Jason Agresti each produced 30+ RBIs and were second and third on the club respectively.

On the bump for the Clams, along with Giampetruzzi, Nick Wegmann, Cody Maw and Kelvan Pilot tied for the team lead in wins this summer (4). Wegmann posted the lowest E.R.A. of the three pitchers (2.78) to go along with 56 strikeouts to just 16 walks during the regular season. Cody Maw finished the campaign with 52 strikeouts and Pilot followed behind with 37 of his own.

Of the relievers who finished out the year, Sean Hughes and Josh Steele followed behind Giampetruzzi in the appearances category. Hughes appeared 21 times and had a .110 batting average against. This mark was just a few points off the Steamers’ franchise mark of .107. Josh Steele appeared 20 times this season and recorded 20 strikeouts this year to just 10 walks.

The Teal and Black set new franchise records in team OPS (.829), stolen bases (133), runs (377) and RBIs (324). The Clams also added 73 homer runs to go along with this offensive production, and they had an 85+% success rate in the stolen bases category. Along with Billy Wilson’s franchise record in runs, Jason Agresti set the franchise mark in fielding percentage behind the plate (1.000). Anthony Maselli set the league single-season stolen base efficiency mark going 30-for-30 this year on the bases.

For the Steamers 2017 team awards this season, Billy Wilson was awarded the Gieseke Gold Award as the most outstanding player this summer. Carmen Giampetruzzi was given the Goodman Glove Award as the most outstanding defender this year, and Nick Wegmann took home the Katy Ebersole “Heart and Soul” Award as the player that best exhibited the hard work and passion on the field that Katy exhibited through her many years as president of the Steamers.

The 2017 Steamers were full of talent and will be remembered for their record breaking performances this year. We thank all the fans who supported the 2017 Steamers and we hope you come back to support the team during the 2018 season.
