Bearcats Scamper Down to Edenton

The Steamers are excited to announce the signing of two Binghamton University (NY) Bearcats out of the NCAA Division I America East Conference. Jason Agresti and Nick Wegmann will come to the Teal and Black this summer.

Jason Agresti spent his summer in 2016 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League with the Danbury Westerners. The 6’2” 215-pound junior posted a .298/.367/.435/.802 slash line in 131 at bats. The right-handed stick had nine doubles, three dingers, and 12 walks to 21 strikeouts. The Yorktown Heights, NY native is a three-year starter for the perennial America East contenders and an offensive-oriented backstop who has hit in the middle of the Binghamton lineup the last two springs. He put up excellent numbers at the plate last summer for a catcher; and his upward-trending spring suggests he is ready to take the next step this summer with Edenton in the CPL.

The everyday catcher and mid-order hitter has slashed .299/.338/.472/.810 from all three spots in the middle of the Bearcat lineup this spring. His 10 doubles and four homers are both tied for the team lead through 34 contests. Agresti is also enjoying a stellar campaign behind the dish, having not committed an error or passed ball, while throwing out 28.6 percent of opposing base-stealers.

Nick Wegmann will come to the Steamers after spending the 2016 summer in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League with the Jamestown Jammers. The 6’1” 190-pound junior had eight appearances, all starts, in 47.1 innings pitched. He posted a 1.90 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 41 strikeouts to just 15 walks. The left-hander rolled the stellar rotation work from last summer into a weekend-starter gig this spring for Binghamton.

The Apalachin, NY native has been impressive and fairly consistent all spring. Through 10 outings, he has nine starts and 50.1 frames of work. Wegmann has posted a 3.22 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. Batters are hitting just .270 against the lefty. Wegmann is a three-pitch southpaw with plus command and control, using the combination of his stuff and location to often pitch economically; something that should serve him well this summer.
