Cuevas’ Late Homer Propels Steamers to Win

The Edenton Steamers (22-15, 5-4) used a late home run to pick up their second straight win against the Fayetteville SwampDogs (23-15, 5-5). The Clams defeated the SwampDogs by a final score of 7-6.

Edenton jumped out to the early lead when Jason Agresti hit his first home run since before the All-Star Break to make it 3-0. Lucas Martinez added to the lead in the first when he singled home a run to make it 4-0.

The SwampDogs had their answer in the third when Johnathan Allen hit a line-drive home run to cut the lead to 4-1. Edenton responded in the bottom half of the frame when Paul Rufo hit his first home run of the summer to make it a 6-1 game.

After the Edenton offense was silenced by Peyton Reesman, the SwampDogs made their move. Fayetteville put together a four-run sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-5. The inning included five hits and a three-run homer by Jason Newman. Newman finished the night 3 for 5 with three RBIs and a home run.

The SwampDogs tied the game in the seventh when Jay Robinson homered off of Jamie Galazin. With the score tied at 6-6, the Clams turned to the red hot Dom Cuevas.

Cuevas hit a solo home run off of the new pitcher in the game Brian Ricker to give Edenton the 7-6 lead. He is now 6 for 10 with eight RBIs and two home runs in the last four games for the Steamers.

Carmen Giampetruzzi was excellent on the back end for Edenton. Gimapetruzzi (2-0) picked up the win working the final two innings while giving up just one hits and striking out two. Brian Ricker (1-1) got the loss for Fayetteville.

The Teal and Black will play host to the Wilmington Shakrs tomorrow night at Historic Hicks Field. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. at the ballpark.
