Latin Lightning Strikes at Hicks Field

The Steamers are excited to announce the signing of two arms from the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) Drovers out of the Sooner Athletic Conference in the NAIA. Francis Ventura and Carlos Pimentel (pronounced pee-MEN-tel) will come to Edenton to play for the Steamers this summer.

Francis Ventura, a left-hander from Villa Tapia, Dominican Republic, is a former transfer from Western Oklahoma State College (WOSC).  The 6’0” 195-pound redshirt-junior is a strong-bodied southpaw with an electric arm, plus command and a legitimate out-pitch breaking ball. He will sit in the low 90s with the fastball early in starts before settling into the 80s.

Ventura has a chance to do some special things as an important piece of the Edenton rotation this summer. Nearing the end of the regular season, Ventura has made nine starts in 11 outings overall, highlighted by one complete-game shutout. The ace of the staff has gone 8-1 with a 1.68 ERA, .95 WHIP, .174 batting average against and a .216 opponent-slugging mark while fanning 69 over 59 innings.

Carlos Pimentel, another WOSC transfer, began the spring in the Drovers rotation where he flourished before being moved to the back of the bullpen in order to best secure USAO victories, often doing multi-inning duty to hold leveraged leads or tie games as a stopper. The 6’4” 235-pound junior is the cousin of MLB star Nelson Cruz and comes in a big-league package himself.

The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native has a fastball that runs 89-93 miles per hour and a nasty slider around 80 miles per hour. Overall so far in 2017, he has 14 appearances, six starts, two complete games and one save through 52.1 frames. Peripheral numbers include a 1.09 WHIP, .193 opponents batting average and 71 strikeouts to just 18 walks.

The Edenton Steamers will proudly be celebrating their 20th anniversary season as a member of the Coastal Plain League in 2017.
