Edenton selections lead National All-Star Team to 5-3 victory over American in 2008 Coastal Plain League All-Star Game

ASHEBORO, N.C. -- Brett Nommensen went 2-3 with a RBI as well as Luke Demko striking out the side in his inning of work as the National All-Star Team would defeat the American 5-3 in a rain-shortened 2008 Coastal Plain League All-Star Game at McCrary Park.

Nommensen (Eastern Illinois) sent a solo shot over the left centerfield fence in the bottom of the first to start the scoring off for the National team.

The American team would answer back as hometown product Daniel Wagner (Asheboro) would send a three run round tripper over the right field fence off of Edenton's own Joe Key (Angelo State) in the second to pull the American team ahead 3-1.

But that would be all of the scoring for the visiting team as the National squad would score four runs off of five hits in the fourth inning for the final scores of the evening.

The game was called due to weather after the seventh inning.

Edenton was well represented as Nommensen would go 2-3 with an RBI, Ty Boyles (Gardner-Webb) would hit 1-2 on the evening with an RBI, Luke Demko (Rhode Island) pitched one scoreless inning only allowing a hit and striking out the side.  Joe Key (Angelo State) would allow three runs off of three hits for the National team as well as Doug Kroll (Oklahoma State) would go 0-3 on the contest.

Edenton's coaching staff was also well represented as head coach Jason Krug (Louisiana-Lafayette) would pick up the win as the head coach of the National team.

The Steamers will be at home for a 7:05 p.m. contest with the Petersburg Generals on Wednesday night.  It will be Postal Service/Host Family Night at Historic Hicks Field.

Mollica hits walk off RBI single in bottom of ninth to defeat Thomasville 6-5

EDENTON, N.C. -- Ryan Mollica (Florida International) hit a walk off infield RBI single, in the bottom of the ninth inning, to defeat West Division rival Thomasville 6-5.

For the 957 fans at Historic Hicks Field they were treated to not only a rare game out of the division but also a game that turned into one of the contests of the year for the Steamers.

For the first seven innings Edenton and Thomasville were locked in a pitcher's duel.  Edenton starter Joe Key (Angelo State) went eight innings allowing two runs and five hits over his outing.  Thomasville starting hurler Phillip Irwin (Mississippi) went seven innings allowing just one run off of just five hits.

It was in the eighth inning that the Steamers applied pressure to Irwin scoring three runs off of three hits.  Those three runs pushed Edenton to a 4-2 lead going into the ninth inning.

Luke Demko (Rhode Island) was the Steamers replacement on the mound to start the ninth inning and started the inning off by surrendering two straight hits, leaving runners at first and third base with one out.  As Demko faced the next Hi-Tom batter in Wes Hobson (Appalachian State), Demko was called for a balk which advanced the runner at third to home for the third run of the game for Thomasville.  Josh Liles (Tennessee) was next up to the plate for the Hi-Toms and would send a round tripper over the left field fence to score the go-ahead run.

With the score 5-4, Edenton faced an uphill battle to push the game into extras or win it as R.J. Harris (Northwood) was the first Edenton player to the plate in the ninth.  Harris would lead off with a single to first base and Jacob Robbins (Kennesaw State) walked to have runners on first and second with no outs.  Brett Nommensen (Eastern Illinois)  dropped a bunt down the third base line and beat out the throw to first to load the bases with no outs.

Ty Boyles (Gardner-Webb) grounded out to third base for the first out but would get credit for the RBI as R.J. Harris would score the tying run.  Doug Kroll (Oklahoma State) was intentionally walked to load the bases yet again as Ryan Mollica (Florida International) was next in line to the plate.  Mollica sent a single to shortstop that scored the speedy Robbins from third to win the game.

Demko picked up the win for the Steamers, improving his record to 4-0 on the season.  Trevor Mullins (Appalachian State) was credited with the loss (1-3) after giving up two runs, off of three hits, in just 0.2 innings pitched.

Edenton was led by a 3-5, three RBI performance from Mollica as well as a 2-4 evening from Nommensen and a 2-3 outing from Ryan Boelsen.

The Steamers will be back in action for a doubleheader against the Outer Banks on Thursday evening at Historic Hicks Field.  First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. and it will be Chowan/Bertie Hospital Night at the Ballpark.

Peninsula cruises to 6-1 victory over Steamers

HAMPTON, N.C. -- Peninsula scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Steamers 6-1 on Monday night at War Memorial Stadium.

The Pilots received another strong pitching performance from their starter, Deck McGuire (Georgia Tech).  McGuire went seven innings only allowing one run as he would earn the win to move to 5-0 on the year.

Edenton took the lead off a Ryan Mollica (Florida International) solo shot in the second inning and the Steamers kept that lead until the fifth inning when Peninsula would tie the contest.

Peninsula would continue their scoring drive in the seventh inning as they scored the go-ahead run and would tack on four more runs off of Brandon Michon (Brigham Young) and Evan Sanford (Cincinnati).  The Steamers pitching staff only gave up one earned run in the contest as the other five were scored off of defensive errors.

For Edenton the loss represented their third straight and will try to get back on the winning side of standings when they face off against the Thomasville Hi-Toms on Tuesday evening at Historic Hicks Field.

Little pitches Peninsula to 6-2 win over Steamers

EDENTON, N.C. -- The largest crowd at Historic Hicks Field this season saw Matt Little (Kentucky) pitch a two run, four hit complete game for the Peninsula Pilots as he would propel the Pilots by the Steamers 6-2 in North Division action on Saturday night.

The crowd who was on hand for Perquimans County/Jim "Catfish" Hunter Night at Historic Hicks Field saw Little completely shut down Edenton as he would sacrifice just one hit through seven innings.  Little would improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Steamers would send Vidal Nuno (Baker) to the mound as he would pitch 5.2 innings and give up five earned runs off of five hits.  Matt Kohorst (San Diego) would get his first action in a Steamer uniform as he came into the game in a relief role and pitch 3.1 innings allowing just one run, which was unearned, off of just two hits.

Edenton did have a bright spot on the offensive side of the ball as Brett Nommensen (Eastern Illinois) would go 2-4 with a run scored for the Steamers.

Edenton loses to Petersburg in extras

PETERSBURG, VA. -- For the second time in the second half, Edenton traveled to the Petersburg Sports Complex and lost to the Generals; this time the match up went into ten innings as the Steamers would drop the contest 3-2 on Friday night.

The offense started with Petersburg (13-23, 4-4 2nd Half) scoring a run in the second inning when Chris Weidlein (Adelphi) singled into right field to bring around Chas Anthony (Erskine).

Edenton (24-11, 4-4 2nd Half) would answer with a pair of runs, one in the fourth and one in the fifth, to push ahead of the Generals after five innings.  The Steamers would score their run in the fourth off of a Ryan Boelsen (Adelphi) sacrifice grounder to second base.  Edenton would tack on yet another run in the next inning as Ty Boyles (Gardner-Webb) would send a single into center field to bring around Kyle Rice (USC-Aiken) to score.

Petersburg would fight back to score one in the eighth inning as Tyler Stubblefield (Kennesaw State) would single into left field and score Keith Hill (Erskine).

The game would remain tied through nine and push the contest into extra innings.  Edenton was not able to generate any scoring offense in their half of the inning and it didn't look like Petersburg would be able to either as they had two outs and a runner at second base.  But Stubblefield had different plans as he would hit a two out single that would score Hill from second base for the winning run.

Kenneth Roberts (Middle Tennessee State) started the game for the Steamers and went four innings, serving up four hits and just one earned run in the game.  Dan Gardo (Campbell) came into the game in a relief role and pitched 3.2 innings, sacrificing just one hit, but that one hit would be an earned run as it served as the tying run of the game in the eighth inning.  Luke Demko (Rhode Island) would relieve Gardo and pitch 1.1 innings and give up two hits.  Evan Sanford (Cincinnati) would pitch the tenth and give up two hits and the deciding run for Petersburg.  Sanford would be credited with the loss as he falls to 0-1 on the season.

Petersburg would send Chris Nelson (Chowan) to the mound for the start as he would pitch 4.2 innings and give up two earned runs off of just two hits.  Dave Slusser (West Chester) would relieve Nelson on the mound as Slusser would pitch 4.1 innings and allow no runs off of four hits.  In the tenth inning the Generals would send Jason Barker (Norfolk State) to pitch as he would only give up one hit as he would get the win for Petersburg as he moves to 1-0 on the year.

Edenton will be back in action at Historic Hicks Field on Saturday night, as they will face off against the Peninsula Pilots for a 7:05 p.m. pitch.  It will be Perquimans County Night at the Ballpark as the Steamers will be honoring Hall of Fame pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter and will be raising money and awareness for ALS.  Hunter lost his battle with "Lou Gehrig's Disease" in 1999.

Edenton picks up close victory at Peninsula

HAMPTON, VA. -- For the first time in the second half the Peninsula Pilots lost a game and it came at the hands of the Steamers who won a close match up 4-2, Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium.

Edenton would get off on the right foot as they would score two runs in the top of the first as both Jacob Robbins (Kennesaw State) and Brett Nommensen (Eastern Illinois) would come around to score off of a Doug Kroll (Oklahoma State) two RBI single into right field.  The Steamers would strike again in the top of the second as Broc Sutton (East Carolina) would get a base knock to bring around Ryan Boelsen (Adelphi) to score the third Edenton run of the game.

Peninsula would not go down quietly as Chris Baker (Old Dominion) sent a solo blast over the right field wall to bring the score to 3-1 at the end of five innings.  Greg Rohan (Kent State) followed that performance in the sixth with a RBI double to score Matt Payton (Western Kentucky) bringing the score to just a one run margin.

Edenton would stop the Peninsula offense after the sixth and would answer with a run of their own in the eighth as Nommensen would again come around to cross the plate to make the final margin 4-2.

The Steamers were led by a strong pitching performance from Ken Elkind (Angelo State) who went six innings, allowed just two earned runs and gave up five hits while picking up his second win of the year (2-0).  Jeff Dennis (Binghamton) pitched two innings in relief allowing only one hit and no runs.  Luke Demko (Rhode Island) would follow Dennis to the mound in the ninth and would surrender a hit to right field that would drop for a single but would strike out the side to pick up his league-leading eleventh save.

For Peninsula they sent Steve Batman (Florida Southern) to the mound for the start.  Batman would pitch 7.2 innings allow seven hits which would lead to three earned runs as Batman would be credited for the loss (3-5).  Kevin O'Hara (Rowan) would come into the game in a relief role and pitch 1.1 innings allowing just one hit for the Pilots.

Offensively the Steamers were led by a trio of players who had two hits as Nommensen would go 2-3 on the evening as both Robbins and Boelsen would have 2-4 nights.  Kroll was the only player from both teams to have a multiple RBI night with two.

The Steamers will be back in action on Friday night as they will travel to the Petersburg Sports Complex to face off against North Division foe, Petersburg, in a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

But the Steamers would storm back as Brett Nommensen (Eastern Illinois) would hit a home run in the bottom of the third to bring Edenton closer to catching Petersburg.  But it was not until Ryan Mollica (Florida International) would get a hit with the help of two errors would allow hit to score the third run of the sixth inning that would bring the Steamers back tied with the Generals.

The crowd of 756 was treated to seeing some good ole fashioned baseball as Mike Wood (Pittsburgh) would come in to pitch the eighth inning, shut down the General offense, pick up his second win (2-1) and would set up the ninth for Luke Demko (Rhode Island) to record his league leading tenth save.

The Steamers will be back in action on Saturday as they will face off against the Petersburg Generals for a 7:05 p.m. tilt at Historic Hicks Field.

Mongiardini pitches Edenton to 5-3 win.

EDENTON, N.C. -- With second place Outer Banks surging late in the first half, the Edenton Steamers needed a quality start Wednesday from Matt Mongiardini against division foe Petersburg.

That’s just what the 540 fans at Historic Hicks Field saw as Edenton edged the Generals 5-3, taking them one step closer to the Petit Cup. With four games remaining in the first half, Edenton enjoys a four game lead over Outer Banks before the two teams square off for the final two games. Edenton currently leads the head-to-head 4-2.

Mongiardini gave the Steamers bullpen some rest Wednesday, despite a shaky second inning. The Temple right hander quickly retired the first two Generals before first baseman Randy Bernosky singled to spark a two-out rally. Petersburg continued with three consecutive singles including a two RBI hit by Matt Williams to give Petersburg an early 2-0 lead.

Mongiardini then got a groundout to escape the inning and settled down after that, retiring 11 straight. Mongiardini goes out in style lasting six innings, scattering seven hits to pick up his third win on the year. It was possibly the last appearance of the summer for the Toms River, NJ native as summer classes at Temple call his name.

The Steamers helped the cause with 12 hits, tacking four runs in the third inning. After a leadoff single by catcher Ty Boyles, the newest Steamer Ryan Mollica (Florida International) legged out a double for his first CPL hit. With both runners in scoring position, Luke Williford singled to score Boyles and Brett Nommenson followed suit scoring Mollica.

Boyles and Mollica gave the Steamers quality hitting in the bottom of the batting order, ending the evening with three hits apiece.

Steamers pitcher Brandom Michon provided two innings of relief to set-up the save for closer Luke Demko, who picked up his ninth save of the summer.

Edenton will enjoy a day off Thursday before facing Petersburg again Friday. Dan Gardo is scheduled to start for Albemarle United Way Night with a 7:05 start.

Edenton moves closer to North Division title by beating Wilson 5-4

WILSON, N.C. -- The Steamers got another outstanding pitching performance from starter Joe Key as Edenton went on to defeat the Wilson Tobs 5-4 on Monday night at Historic Fleming Stadium.

Key (Angelo State), started the game for the Steamers, pitched five innings and allowed no earned runs off of three Wilson hits.  This performance won Key his fourth decision in as many games started for Edenton.

Key was able to get some help offensively when Ryan Boelsen (Adelphi) sent a two run shot over the fence in left center field in the third inning to push the score to 3-0 in favor of Edenton.  Boelsen would finish the night going 3-5 and scoring three RBIs.

The Steamers would continue to put runs on the scoreboard as they placed one in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the seventh to give Edenton a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the inning.

Wilson would not go down quietly as they would put two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning off of a Kevin Weidenbacher (UNC-Asheville) RBI sacrifice grounder to the pitcher as well as a Cody Hawn (Louisville) RBI single down the right field line that would score another run.

The Steamers would then put Brandon Michon (Brigham Young) on the mound for the bottom of the eighth inning.  Michon ran into a little bit of trouble after walking one and giving up a RBI to Jared Richmond (Tusculum) to bring the game to a one run lead for Edenton.

Edenton then looked towards two time Pitcher of the Week Luke Demko (Rhode Island) to come in and close the game.  Demko finished the task as he was able to get the final out of the eighth inning and retire the side in the Wilson half of the ninth to win the game for the Steamers.  With that performance Demko picked up his eighth save of the year.

The Steamers will be coming back to the confines of Historic Hicks Field to face off against the Tobs in a 7:05 re-match on Tuesday night.

Demko racks up second straight Pitcher of Week Award

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Edenton Steamers closer Luke Demko continued his push for an All-Star bid, locking up the Coastal Plain League Player of the Week award for week three. It was Demko’s second consecutive week with the accolade. The Steamers went 3-2 last week and Demko had a say in each victory. In three appearances, the 6-7, 250-pound junior from Rhode Island, went three and 2/3 innings, picking up a win and two saves.

On Monday, Demko entered the game in the eighth inning with a runner on third before getting Chris Weidlein to pop out.  The righty struck out a General in the ninth before the pouring down rain shortened the game by two outs. Demko earned his second save of the week a day later at Peninsula. The Criminal Justice Major came in the extra frame to preserve a 4-3 Edenton victory. Demko started the inning off with a walk before thanks to a one out line out double play to shortstop Broc Sutton, faced only three batters. The save was Demko’s seventh of the summer, thrusting him on top of the Coastal Plain League.

Edenton tacked up three runs in the ninth inning of Saturday’s game, sending it to extra frames for the second time on the week. Demko pitched the tenth and eleventh inning and Ben Wolgamot’s game winning solo homer help earn his third win on the season.

In the three games, Demko allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out five. On the season, the righty sports a perfect 0.00 ERA and 3-0 record through 10 appearances. His seven saves came through 12 2/3 innings pitched, where he has only surrendered four hits, walked five and struck out an impressive 16.

Demko shares the week three honor with Peninsula's Steve Batman and Justin Sarratt of Thomasville.

Wolgamot homers in 11th to defeat Peninsula 11-10

EDENTON, N.C. -- Ben Wolgamot slammed a walk off home run to left field, off of a 1-2 count with two outs, as the Steamers defeated Peninsula 11-10 Saturday night at Historic Hicks Field.

The Steamers jumped out to a 7-1 lead after six complete innings but that is when momentum switched over to Peninsula.  Edenton started the seventh inning out with reliever Evan Sanford (Cincinnati) but Sanford got into trouble quickly as he faced three Pilot batters, giving up a hit, a walk and hit a Pilot batter to fill the bases with no outs.

Edenton then looked to reliever Mike Wood (Pittsburgh) to try to get an out but he was not able to do so as he gave up two hits and gave up a walk to not only load the bases again but more importantly allowing three runs to score.

The Steamers then look towards Ken Elkind (Angelo State) to close out the inning.  Elkind would retire the side but would allow for three more runs to score giving Peninsula a nine run top of the seventh inning.

Edenton came into the bottom of the ninth inning still down 10-7 but would come back as Kevin O'Hara (Rowan) would face two batters and give up two hits that would lead to two more runs.  Kevin Moreland (Christopher Newport) would attempt to close the game out but would give up the tying run as Broc Sutton (East Carolina) would score to knot the game at 10.

As the game went into extras the Steamers sent Luke Demko (Rhode Island) to the mound where he would give up one hit but would retire the side with no runs being scored in the tenth and would give up another hit while striking out two in the top of the 11th.

That would place the game in the hands of Ryan Boelsen (Adelphi), Sutton and Wolgamot.  Boelsen led things off with a home run shot that went foul down the left field line.  Boelsen would then record the first out of the inning by grounding out to second base.  Sutton would then come up and record the second out by striking out swinging.  With two outs, Wolgamot was the last hope for the Steamers in the eleventh.  After pushing the count 1-2, Wolgamot turned on a high fastball and sent it sailing over the left field fence to win the game for the Steamers.

Luke Demko (Rhode Island) picked up his third win of the season, moving to 3-0, after pitching two complete and offering up two hits and no runs.

Kevin Moreland (Christopher Newport) suffered the loss as he went 2.2 innings and gave up the home run shot to Wolgamot, with the loss Moreland moves to 1-2.

The Steamers pounded out fifteen hits on the game and were lead by a 3-6 night from Laurn Randell (Texas State, a 3-5 outing from Ryan Boelsen and a pair of 2-5 nights from Broc Sutton and Brett Nommensen (Eastern Illinois).

Edenton will take a three day break from divisional play as they will play a home and home series with the Wilson Tobs on Monday night in Wilson and a Tuesday night affair with the Tobs at Historic Hicks Field.  Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. for both of those match-ups.
