Steamers Begin Arms Race for 2017

Edenton, NC – The Steamers are excited to announce the addition of pitchers Andrew Marzheuser (MARZ-how-zur) and Alex Strizak (STRY-zak) to the 2017 pitching staff.

Marzheuser comes from Florida Institute of Technology in the Sunshine State Conference in NCAA Division II. The 6’3” 180-pound sophomore appeared 12 times for the Panthers in the spring of 2016. He totaled five starts for 41.2 innings pitched and opponents hit just .180 against him. Opponents also slugged just .253 against the Morrow, OH native. He posted a WHIP of .96 along with 42 strikeouts to just 13 walks.

Marzheuser is serving as a weekend starter this season for the Panthers. The lanky underclassman emerged prominently on the mound and in the rotation for Florida Tech as a freshman in 2016. Marzheuser has quality stuff with advanced command and pitchability that allowed him to make an impact right away in arguably the best Division II conference in the country. The right-hander features a four-pitch mix with an upper 80s fastball complemented by a changeup, split-fingered fastball and curve. With a long projectable frame that is still filling out, it is possible there could be more in the tank as he progresses. Marzheuser is off to a strong start already this spring with a 2-0 record through 14.1 innings. He also has a 1.26 ERA with a WHIP of 1.19. Marzheuser has set down 14 men on strikes and opponents are hitting just .204 against him this season.

Alex Strizak will come across the country from Point Loma Nazarene University in California. The 6’2” 180-pound redshirt-sophomore will be in the role of middle reliever for the Sea Lions in the PacWest of NCAA Division II this spring.  The Bonsall, CA native pitched in the Northwoods League during his 2015 freshman summer and will come to Edenton after a summer with the storied Palm Springs Power program in California, which has fed a number of stellar players to the Steamers over the years. As a member of the Power in the Southern California Colligate Baseball League, the left-handed pitcher appeared in 12 games all in relief.  Strizak pitched 21.2 innings while posting a 1.03 WHIP and 1.68 ERA. Opponents hit .221 against him last summer. The former Loyola Marymount University transfer also added 26 strikeouts to seven walks for Palm Springs.

Strizak is a reliable finesse southpaw whose fastball works into the mid-80s to go along with a plus changeup and curveball for a third pitch. Quality left-handed relief pitching is a valued commodity at every level and Strizak looks to represent that this summer with the Teal and Black.
