Steamers Clinch Playoff Spot Despite Loss to Peninsula

The Edenton Steamers (29-25, 12-14) have clinched a spot in the 2017 Petitt Cup Playoffs. The Clams took a loss tonight by a final score of 7-1 to the Peninsula Pilots (32-22, 16-10), but with a loss by Morehead City, Edenton will be heading to the playoffs.

The Peninsula Pilots took the early lead and never looked back. The Pilots got three runs in the bottom half of the second inning on five hits. All five of the Peninsula hits came with two outs in the inning.

Sam Griggs got the rally started with a double to left field to make it 2-0. Kyle Wrighte finished off the inning with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Pilots stretched their advantage in the fourth inning on an error from James Battley in left after the ball went off of his glove on a fly ball, and Kyle Wrighte came around to score on the play.

Edenton got their first and only run of the game in the fifth inning. The Steamers brought home a run on an RBI groundout to the shortstop by Lucas Martinez to cut the lead to 4-1.

The Pilots made it a 5-1 game in the bottom half of the seventh when Drake McNamara hit a solo home run over the left-field wall. They added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Drew Delsignore came in to score on a wild pitch, and Logan Brown scored on an RBI single by Sam Griggs to make it 7-1.

Due to a short bullpen, Josh Steele went seven innings while giving up 14 hits, seven runs, six earned, two walks and two strikeouts. William Robbins came in for relief and was able to get out of a jam. The Francis Marion product got a 4-6-3 double play, walked one and struck out one.

Josh Steele (1-3) took the loss for Edenton while Ryan Fox (4-1) picked up the win for the Pilots. The Teal and Black will be back in action on Sunday for a doubleheader at Morehead City to finish the regular season. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. The Playoff game and location is TBD and will be announced late Monday night.
