Steamers Add Righties to Pitching Staff

Steamers Add Righties to Pitching Staff

The Edenton Steamers announce the newest additions to the 2018 roster.

Ryan Scharf and A.J. Spencer from Middle Tennessee State University and Josh Leaser from Air Force Academy all come in as right-handed pitchers to cement Edenton's staff this summer.

Head coach Russ Burroughs is excited to welcome in more arms.

"I've had the pleasure to get to know Caleb Longshore (pitching coach) at MTSU this season. The fact that we can get two of his guys from his pitching staff is tremendous. He's worked extremely hard to turn that program around," Burroughs said.

Scharf, a 6'4" 225-pound junior, transferred to Middle Tennessee State from Kaskaskia College.

Hailing from Decatur, IL, Scharf posted a 5-2 record in 12 appearances with Kaskaskia. Tossing 66 innings, his strikeouts per nine innings ratio was 8.73.

"Since Ryan's coming here with no pressure, he can relax and become a great reliever for us. He'll get better here and help Middle Tennessee State a lot next season," Coach Burroughs said.

His teammate Spencer has spent time as a starter and reliever in his junior year. Striking out 31 batters over 29.1 innings, the 6'1" 200-pounder has started five games and relieved in six.

"You know you're going to get a bulldog. He's projected to be a starter for us, he'll be one of our big competitors," Coach Burroughs said.

From Locust Grove, GA, Spencer holds opponents to a .248 batting average.

Leaser, who will be with the Steamers for a few weeks, will also be coming out of the bullpen.

A sophomore from Coronado, CA, Leaser has seen action in 15 games. Standing at 6'1" 210 pounds, Leaser has fanned 21 hitters in 25.2 innings.

Coming to an area with a heavy military veteran presence, he is expected to be a fan favorite.

"The fact that we can get someone from Air Force is a great opportunity for this organization. These men and women serve our country and here in Edenton, we can be a part of his journey. The town can really get behind him," Coach Burroughs said.

Opening Day at Historic Hicks Field is on May 31st, as the Steamers host the Holly Springs Salamanders. Season tickets and ticket packages are on sale now and can be purchased by stopping by the Steamers office, or calling us at (252) 482-4080.
