Mustangs ride past Steamers for fourth straight win

By PJ Potter

Four home runs from Edenton's bats could not defeat the Martinsville Mustangs on Monday night, losing 9-6 at Historic Hicks Field.

This marks the second straight game the Steamers roped four round-trippers at home, but both ended without a victory. The loss lowers the Clams to a 2-7 record, while Martinsville marches on with its fourth straight win, now at 5-5.

Rich Ciufo, Zane Harris, Anthony Warneke and Devon Gardner had the homers, all of them solo shots. Each of them ended the game with two hits as well.

A four-run fourth inning for the Mustangs pushed the team ahead 6-3 and never looked back. In the frame, Daniel Vitello collected a RBI single to tie it up at 3-3. Leadoff hitter Chase Dawson then crushed a three-run shot, a lead the Clams could never overcome.

Gavin Weyman improved to 1-1 for the Mustangs on the mound, going 5.1 innings with two strikeouts. He allowed three home runs and five total for the outing. Ryan Evans got the save, striking out a batter in the ninth.

Edenton's Jake Miller got the loss as the starter. Miller fanned five hitters in 3.1 innings, but surrendered five runs on four hits and three walks. Six relievers followed after Miller. Troy Maslowski made his debut on the mound and tossed one scoreless frame. He evaded any trouble after loading the bases via a hit by pitch, infield single and fielder's choice.

Jorge Lozano, after not recording an out in his first appearance, struck out two Mustangs in the ninth.

The Steamers next play a doubleheader Tuesday night on the road against the Peninsula Pilots. The first game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with both contests going seven innings.
