Matt Gill's best outing of the summer helped gallop the Steamers to a 6-2 win against the Martinsville Mustangs on Wednesday night at Hooker Field.
Gill battled for seven innings with just two runs allowed, marking the third consecutive game that Edenton's starter has gone seven frames with only two runs surrendered (Jake Miller and Charles Hall). Having won eight times in its last 10 contests, Edenton is now tied for second place in the division at 10-11 with the Wilson Tobs.
After giving the Mustangs one run in each of the first two innings to give the home team a 2-1 lead, Gill buckled down and tossed five shutout frames.
With the help of his offense, Gill was able to secure his first win in a Clams uniform.
Devon Gardner paved the way with a leadoff triple on the very first pitch of the game. He came in to score after a Warneke single.
Tyler Jones and Anthony Jefferson continue to see the ball well from the bottom of the lineup. Jones added two hits and a walk and Jefferson finished 1-for-2 with two base on balls to facilitate the top of the order.
Kyle Shimp and Ben Anderson closed the door for the Steamers. Shimp, recording his first outs this year, fanned three batters and allowed one hit in the eighth inning. Anderson added two strikeouts of his own to finish it in the ninth.
The Steamers return to action on Thursday night for a doubleheader on the road against the Peninsula Pilots.
