Ciufo charges Clams to climb division ladder

By PJ Potter

Rich Ciufo's three-hit night carried the Edenton Steamers to an 8-6 win on Friday night over the Martinsville Mustangs at Hicks Field.

The win puts the Clams at 6-8 in the second half and are winners in five of their last seven contests. Martinsville, now on a five-game losing skid, fell to 6-10 in the closing half of the summer.

Ciufo logged his 13th multi-hit game in the sixth frame, a lead-off solo shot to left field. The round-tripper was his fifth of the year and first in 27 ballgames. He totaled four runs scored and reached base five times.

Jake Miller scooped his fourth win of the year, going six innings with nine strikeouts. He now has fanned 47 batters in 38.1 innings, which places him fourth in the entire league.

Martinsville made it interesting, however, in the top half of the ninth inning. Down 8-3, the Mustangs got on base five straight times, scoring three runs off of Kyle Shimp. Shimp, after not recording an out, was replaced by Jorge Lozano.

Lozano set the side down 1-2-3 with two strikeouts to leave two runners stranded.

Zane Harris tallied two hits with two runs batted in, stretching his hit streak to 12 games. Harris also legged his first three-bagger of the summer.

Devon Gardner, Anthony Jefferson and Nick Caruso all contributed to the win with runs driven in.

For Martinsville, Garrett Sendelbach got the loss, falling to 2-3. He handed three runs (two earned) in four frames as the starter.

On offense, Cross Factor led the way with three hits, one RBI and a walk. Chase Dawson, who leads the Coastal Plain League in hits, added two more on Friday night with a pair of runs batted in. Daniel Vitello scored twice with two hits and one base on balls from the leadoff spot.

This was the final time Martinsville and Edenton played each other in 2018. The teams split the series at 4-4.

The Clams return to action on Saturday night at home against the Morehead City Marlins set for 7 p.m.
