For the second time in two games, the Edenton Steamers trailed by five runs in the ninth inning. Having rallied against Wilson on Tuesday night to win, the Clams continued their clutch trend with a 9-8 victory over the Peninsula Pilots at Hicks Field on Thursday.
Coming into the final frame with an 8-3 deficit, Edenton's hopes were dim.
Bryson Worrell led off with a walk, and that got the Steamers crowd a little more excited. TJ Wegmann singled two batters later, and the same energy swept the ballpark as it did on Tuesday night in Wilson.
Peninsula's pitchers could not throw a strike afterwards, walking three straight batters. The Steamers were going to do it again.
The Pilots, fearful of Rich Ciufo, intentionally walked him to load the bases. It was Worrell's turn again in the lineup.
Batting for the first time on the right side in the game, the switch-hitter poked the ball into right field to walk it off.
The Steamers, despite walking the Pilots 17 times, somehow were able to snag another win.
Harris stretched his hit streak to 16 games. Over the span, he has 29 hits and 19 RBI.
Warneke, who pinch-hit for Devon Gardner, went 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs batted in.
Ciufo helped with a base knock and two walks.
Jorge Lozano earned his first win of the year, going 1.1 frames with no runs allowed on no hits and three walks.
For the Pilots, Cole Prestegard smashed a home run, picking up three RBI and walking three times. Jonathan Embry logged four base on balls.
The win puts the Steamers at 8-10 in the second half, which is tied with Martinsville for third place. Each team is four games back of the Tobs in the closing half of the summer.
Edenton returns to action on Friday night at home against the Holly Springs Salamanders set for 7 p.m.
