By PJ Potter

The Edenton Steamers concluded the 2018 season with a doubleheader on the road against the Peninsula Pilots on Saturday night, winning the first matchup 6-5 and dropping the second 6-1.

The Clams finished third in the overall standings in the North division with a 24-26 record, marking the first time since 2011 the Teal and Black did not have a winning season. In the closing half, Edenton went 12-12.

In the first game, the Steamers were down 5-0 in the fifth frame, but roared back for five runs of their own. After staying quiet all night long, Tim Bechtold started the rally with a double that scored Will Ethridge.

Nick Caruso and Anthony Warneke collected RBI singles to make it 5-3.

The Pilots then got a little wild, walking Anthony Jefferson witht the bases loaded, followed by a wild pitch that scored Rich Ciufo to tie at 5-5.

Ben Whetstone smacked the game-winning hit in the sixth inning, another single to bring home Bechtold.

Peninsula quickly got on the board first with a grand slam in the opening inning off the bat of Cole Prestegard.

Ryan Scharf got the win, improving to 3-0 in one shutout frame. RD Lutze earned his third save with two strikeouts in the last inning.

In the second game, Eamon McNeil provided the only offensive production with a sacrifice fly RBI in the fifth inning.

Whetstone finished the night going 3-for-6 with one run batted in and a walk, finalizing his batting average to .327 in 28 games with six home runs and 21 RBI.

Zane Harris slapped a hit up the middle in his last-bat.

Ciufo, who was an infielder all season, was the last pitcher to toe the rubber for the Clams, tossing one inning with two strikeouts and no runs allowed.

Nick Caruso also pitched for the first time, getting tabbed with four runs in 0.2 innings.
