Familiar Faces Flood Edenton

Familiar Faces Flood Edenton

By Victoria Conway

The Edenton Steamers have announced its latest additions to the 2019 roster.

Ryan Scharf of Maryville University (MO), Tyler Hopman of Kean University (NJ) and Brennan O'Neil of Seton Hall University will be with Edenton this summer.

Scharf is the final returner from last season. The 6'3, 200-pound redshirt-junior struck out 15 batters in 11.1 innings pitched for the Steamers in 2018.

"I know what we are getting with Ryan. He's a competitor and knows how to pitch. I think with another year under his belt he will continue to grow and improve," said head coach Russ Burroughs.

The Decatur, Ill. native has struck out ten batters over 8.2 innings this season for Maryville.

Hopman, a 6'6' 215-pound senior, brings a unique wrinkle to the Clams' staff. The Old Bridge, NJ product throws with both his right and left hand.

"We were supposed to have Tyler last year, but he got injured. I was devastated when I got that news. However, good things come to those who wait, and we are going to be able to use him in any situation and he will be up for the challenge," Burroughs said.

In four appearances with Kean, Hopman has held opponents to a .220 batting average.

O'Neill, a 6'1' 195-pound freshman, adds another power arm to the Steamers' rotation.

"We checked in with his coaches and they had great things to say about the young arm. It will be a great opportunity for him to develop and grow," Burroughs said.

Hopman and O'Neil each have family residing in the Edenton area. A sense of familiarity will bode well for the New Jersey natives as they get ready for the season.
