Clams Fill Positional Gaps

Clams Fill Positional Gaps

The Steamers have added depth to their positional needs with their latest 2019 roster additions.

Sam Freedman and Jake Evans of Binghamton University, Anthony Stehlin of Concord University and Mason Holt of Navarro College have all signed with Edenton.

Freedman, a 6'3 180-pound sophomore, is someone head coach Russ Burroughs expects to compete for the starting catching job.

"He is a very big stick from the left side. On the defensive end, he can catch, play first and DH. I envision him competing for the starting job as our catcher. We want to allow him to develop his catching skills and take them with him to Binghamton next spring," said Burroughs.

The Media, PA native is batting .297 in 74 at-bats with the Bearcats.

Evans, another Binghamton product, will provide the Steamers with excellent defense and versatility.

"Jake is a gold glove caliber player, you can put him anywhere.  I have all the confidence in the world that he will play outstanding defense. He has been on a hot streak offensively, so hopefully that can continue when he gets down here," said Burroughs.

Stemming from Liverpool, NY, the 6'1 160-pound sophomore has 11 hits in his past nine games, raising his average 48 points in that span.

Stehlin, a 6'2 180-pound sophomore, is a two-way player and can play multiple positions for the Clams.

"With adding Anthony, we feel that our depth is going to be a strength of ours this summer. Even when we give our regulars a day off, we will not be missing a beat," said Burroughs.

Hailing from Montclair, VA, he has posted 3.86 ERA in 16.1 innings pitched. On the offensive side of the ball, he is hitting .378 with 26 RBI.

Holt, a sophomore, is currently batting .352 with 4 homeruns and 30 runs driven in.

"Mason is a good outfielder who can play all three positions. Anywhere he plays he will be an asset. Offensively, he should be able to thrive at our field with his gap to gap approach," said Burroughs.
