Former Steamer Honored with the AFL Sportsmanship Award |
Former Edenton Steamer Kevin Mattison (2007, UNC-Asheville) was recently named to the Miami Marlins 40-man roster. Along with receiving that great news, the very next day he was honored with Major League Baseball’s Arizona Fall League Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award. The significance of his elevation to the Marlins’ 40-man is two-fold. It indicates that Mattison is part of their Major League plans as early as next season, while also protecting him in this week’s Rule V draft from being poached by another organization that would look at him for an active Major League roster spot in 2012.

“I am extremely excited about returning to Edenton next summer. I feel honored and blessed to have the opportunity, not only to return, but to return as the head coach. We did a lot of special things, won a ton of games, broke several individual and team records, accomplished numerous goals, and although fell one game short of hoisting the Pettit Cup, became part of a truly unique experience.” Coach Steve Moritz commented about returning to Edenton as the Head Coach next season.
